This is one of the best works by the renowned artist Riza-i Abbasi. The miniature is the left part of a diptych showing a noble youth feasting in the company of his suite.
On the bank of a stream, resting in the shade of a large tree, is a group of young men and girls. By the right edge of the composition is a young man in violet attire and a large white turban, his yellow cloak falling carelessly from his shoulders. Nearby another youth pours himself more wine. Two ladies taste fruit and look calmly upon the drunk and unconscious young man stretched at their feet, his turban unwound on the ground. A servant bends over him and tries to revive him.
The composition extends beyond the borders and the dark green leaves of the tree blend into the leaves painted on the border with liquid gold. The landscape background sets off the elegant yellow and lilac clothing of the thoughtful girl in her white head-cloth. Another detail in the border is also worthy of notice - a mountain goat on its knees drinking from the stream in the bottom left corner.
It is possible that the diptych came from a rich manuscript or album, possibly commissioned by the youth who is the central figure in the right leaf.
