Painting, Tempera, gilding and silvering on panel, 76.5x59 cm
Origin: Russia, First half of the 16th century

The ever popular St George is shown standing full length at the centre of the icon, wearing rich armour and a medallion on his chest with an image of Christ Emmanuel. Running around this central part are 14 boxes containing scenes from the saint's life, making this a rare example of an icon with the life of St George. A number of stylistic indications - the elegant, fine, elongated full-length figure of St George, the elongated figures in the boxes - allow us to attribute the icon to a Moscow artist. The borders between the individual scenes are not clearly defined, which creates the impression that they are unitetd into a single composition. The icon was painted during the early part of the 16th century.
