This complex, multi-figure composition is divided into two parts, with Paradise to the left and Hell to the right. In the upper part is Christ as Judge, weighing each man's virtues against his sins and despatching sinners to Hell. A winding snake with 20 loops illustrates various sins. The righteous, headed by the Apostle Peter, are moving towards Paradise. At the bottom of the icon are small scenes showing various tortures which await the sinners. Novgorod traditions - the abundance of red and green, many inscriptions - are clearly felt in this icon, but stylistic indications suggest that it was the work of a master from the Russian North.
