A family or children depicted in an interior or against a landscape was a favourite theme of Simon. The portrait was probably produced in Brittany, where the artist and his family stayed in summer at his villa by the sea. The work dates between 1890 and 1897, because in 1897 it was acquired by Alexander Benois for Maria Tenisheva, in whose collection it was held before 1903, the year when she sold out her entire collection. |
