Beneath the coats-of-arms is an inscription mentioning the Swabian noble family of Ulm, for many years linked with the Swiss monastery of Saint-Galle. In 1577 Marx von Ulm became a citizen of Zurich and from 1616 he was adviser at Saint-Galle and Steward of the home for the aged.

Another stained glass panel exists with the arms of Marx von Ulm and his wife, also by the Swiss glass painter Spengler, produced in 1626. It differs from this example only in a few details.
