Landscape, Painting, Oil on canvas, 311x147 cm
Origin: France, 1802

Ancient ruins were Robert's favourite motif in his architectural landscapes. Here he showed a grandiose, complex structure, but the mass and weight of the stone does not seem heavy and overbearing thanks to the pale sky which can be seen through the arches rising one above the other. The green landscape visible through the lower arch enlivens the monotony of the stone, and the group of people playing hide-and-seek add a sense of the theatrical to this depiction of powerful architecture.
