Kneeling in his rich gold-embroidered robes is Philipp Wittelsbach , a major figure in the Reformation, son of the Elector of Pfalz, Bishop of Freising and Administrator of Naumburg. Behind the donor we see his patron St Philip with a cross and opposite, the Apostle Peter with his huge keys. The light colouring creates a joyous mood and gives the scene something of a secular character. A clear interest in nature reveals the influence of the artists of the Dunai school, creators of a landscape genre in European painting. |
